Gauge

With Lion Brand Yarns “Jiffy”:  10.5 dc & 5.5 rows = 4” on size J/10 (6 mm) hook

With Patons “Divine”:                  10 dc & 4.5 rows = 4” on size J/10 (6 mm) hook

Note on sizing:  Because Patons “Divine” is more textured than Lion Brand Yarns “Jiffy” and works to a larger gauge, it may result in a slightly larger beret.

Beret

Foundation ring: Ch 4, join into ring with slip st (or use magic disappearing loop method: wrap yarn around finger, insert hook into ring, yo and pull lp through ring, then work beginning chain of Rnd 1. After first few rounds are completed, close ring by pulling on yarn tail.)

Rnd 1: Ch 3, work 11 dc in ring (12 dc). Do not join or turn on this and all rounds through Rnd 9.  Place contrast yarn marker and carry it up as you work to note beginning of each new round.

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): To begin continuous spiral, dc in 2nd ch of beg ch-3 on Rnd 1, dc in 3rd ch (top) of beg ch-3, *2 dc in next dc, rep from * around, do not join (24 dc)

Rnd 3 (inc rnd): *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, rep from * around, do not join (36 dc)

Rnd 4 (inc rnd): *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, rep from * around, do not join (48 dc)

Rnd 5 (inc rnd): *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, rep from * around, do not join (60 dc)

Rnd 6 (inc rnd): *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc, rep from * around, do not join (72 dc)

Rnd 7 (inc rnd): *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dc, rep from * around, do not join (84 dc)

Begin decreases:

Rnd 8 (dec rnd): *Dc in next 5 dc, dc2tog, rep from * around, do not join (72 dc)

Rnd 9 (dec rnd): *Dc in next 4 dc, dc2tog, rep from * around, do not join (60 dc)

Rnd 10 (dec rnd): *Dc in next 3 dc, dc2tog, rep from * around, join with sl st (48 dc)

Continue to work in joined rounds as follows:
