BELLS & SHELLS STOCKING (crochet)

Skill level: Intermediate

Size: Approx. 16" long x 7" wide

 

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn: 200 yds. green, 100 yds. red

Fuzzy angora/nylon or mohair/nylon blend yarn for cuff:  50 yds.

(Sample shown in Plymouth Yarns "Encore" & Tahki "Jolie")

Size H/8 (5 mm) hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

9 gold jingle bells (1/2")

Red sewing thread

Sewing needle

Tapestry needle

 

Gauge: 2 shells and 2 single crochet = 3" with size H hook

Stitches/Terms:  beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), repeat (rep), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), space (sp), triple crochet (trc)

Special stitches:

Shell:  (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc) in same st (unless otherwise instructed)

 

Stocking

Rnd 1:  With red, starting at toe, ch 4, join into ring, ch 3, work 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (12 dc)

Rnd 2:  Ch 3, dc in same dc, 2 dc in ea dc around, join with sl st (24 dc)

Rnd 3:  Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, *1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, rep from * around, join with sl st.  Fasten off red, join green (36 dc)

Rnd 4:  With green, ch 1, sc in same dc and ea dc around, join with sl st to beg sc (36 sc)

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in same sc, skip 1 sc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next sc (shell completed), skip 1 sc, *sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, shell in next sc, skip 1 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st to beg sc (9 shells)

Next round: Sl st to center sp of first shell, ch 1, sc in same sp, shell in next sc, *sc in center sp of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st to beg sc (9 shells)

Next round: Ch 3, (1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same sc, sc in center sp of next shell, *shell in next sc, sc in center sp of next shell, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (9 shells)

Repeat last 2 rounds 4 times.

Next round:  Ch 1, sc in next dc, skip ch-1 sp, sc in next 2 dc, *sc in next sc, sc in next 4 dc (skipping ch-1 sp), rep from * around, join with sl st (44 sc)

Next round (divide for heel opening): Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in next 21 sc, ch 22, skip 22 sc, join with sl st to first sc (22 sc, 22 ch)

Next round: Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc in ea sc and ch around, join with sl st (44 sc)

Next round (decrease round): Ch 1, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, *sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog, rep from * around, ending sc in last sc, join with sl st (36 sc)

Next round: Ch 1, sc in same sc, skip 1 sc, shell in next sc, skip 1 sc, *sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, shell in next sc, skip 1 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (9 shells)

Next round: Sl st to center sp of first shell, ch 1, sc in same sp, shell in next sc, *sc in center sp of next shell, shell in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st to beg sc (9 shells)

Next round: Ch 3, (1 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same sc, sc in center sp of next shell, *shell in next sc, sc in center sp of next shell, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (9 shells)

Repeat last 2 rounds until 16 shell rounds have been completed from heel opening.

Next round: Ch 1, *sc in next dc, sc in ch-1 sp, sc in next dc, skip next dc, sc in next sc, skip next dc, rep from * around, join with sl st (36 sc)

Work 1 round sc, join with sl st (36 sc). Fasten off green.

Heel:

Attach red at center back of heel opening, on foot side.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st and ea sc around, placing an extra sc at inner corners on both sides of heel opening (46 sc). Place removable markers (bobby pin or safety pin) in each of the two inner corner stitches and move them up each round.

Rnd 2 (decrease round): Ch 1, sc in same sc and ea sc to 3 sts before first marker, sc2tog, sc in marked st, sc2tog, sc to 3 sts before second marker, sc2tog, sc in marked st, sc2tog, sc to end, join with sl st (4 sts decreased)(42 sc)

Work 1 round even.

Rep decrease round (38 sc)

Repeat last 2 rounds until 10 sts remain.  Cut yarn, leaving 8" tail to weave through remaining sts, pull to gather sts and close opening, fasten off and weave in tail.

Cuff:

Rnd 1: Attach white fuzzy yarn at center back of stocking top.  Ch 1, sc in ea sc around, join with sl st (36 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in back loop only of ea sc around, join with sl st (36 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, do not turn, sc in ea sc around (36 sc)

Rnd 4:  Ch 1, sc in same sc, skip 1 sc, shell in next sc, skip 1 sc, *sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, shell in next sc, skip 1 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (9 shells)

Rnd 5:  Sl st to center sp of first shell, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same sp, sc in next sc, *(3 dc, ch2, 3 dc) in center sp of next shell, sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (9 shells)

Rnd 6: Sl st to center sp of first shell, ch 3, (3 dc, ch 3, 4 dc) in same sp, sc in next sc, *(4 dc, ch3, 4 dc) in center sp of next shell, sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (9 shells)

Rnd 7: Sl st to center sp of first shell, ch 4 (4 trc, ch 3, 4 trc) in same sp, sc in next sc, *(4 trc, ch3, 4 trc) in center sp of next shell, sc in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (9 shells).  Fasten off white.

Repeat last 2 rounds until 10 sts remain.  Cut yarn, leaving 8" tail to weave through remaining sts, pull to gather sts and close opening, fasten off and weave in tail.

Hanger:

Join red to center back at top of stocking cuff (attach it securely around the post of a green sc on inside of stocking), ch 16, sc around post of green sc next to where red yarn was first attached.

Next round: Ch 1, sc in ea ch around, join with sl st to beg sc, fasten off and secure yarn tails  inside top of cuff.

Cuff trim:

Join red in center sp of any shell point on cuff, ch 1, work 2 sc in same sp, sc in ea trc and ea sc around, end with 2 sc in same sp as beginning 2 sc, join with sl st, fasten off red.

Finishing: Block stocking by laying it between damp towels, stretching cuff points to shape, and leave to dry.  Using red thread, sew 1 jingle bell to each of the 9 cuff points.
