BUCKET HAT/BAG  

Skill level: Easy

 

Size:   Teen/Adult - hat/bag measures approx.  22" around, approx. 9" deep

 

Materials:

 

200 yds. multicolor worsted wt. yarn

(Sample shown in Plymouth Yarns “Encore Colorspun”)

 

Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

 

6 wooden pony beads

 

Tapestry needle

 

Gauge:  13.5 hdc = 4", 5 rnds hdc = 2" with worsted wt. yarn on size H/8 (5 mm) hook

 

Stitches/Terms:  back loop only (BLO), beginning (beg), chain (ch), cluster (cl), front loop only (FLO), half double crochet (hdc), increase (inc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st)

 

Hat/Bag

 

Rnd 1: Ch 4 (or wind loop of yarn around finger and work over strands of loop to form beginning ring), ch 1, work 10 hdc in ring, join with sl st (11 hdc)

 

Rnd 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, work 2 hdc in ea hdc around, join with sl st (22 hdc)

 

Rnd 3:  Ch 2, hdc in same hdc, hdc in next hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in next hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (33 hdc)

 

Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in ea of next 2 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 2 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (44 hdc)

 

Rnd 5: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in ea of next 3 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 3 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (55 hdc)

 

Rnd 6: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in ea of next 4 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 4 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (66 hdc)

 

Rnd 7: Ch 2, hdc in ea hdc around, join with sl st (66 hdc)

 

Rnd 8: Ch 2, working in back loop only (BLO) of ea st, hdc in ea hdc around, join with sl st (66 hdc)

 

Begin cluster pattern:

 

Rnd 9: Ch 2, *yo, insert hook in same st, yo and pull loop through (3 lps on hk), insert hk in next st, yo, pull lp through (4 lps on hk), yo, pull through all 4 lps on hk, rep from * around, join with sl st (66 clusters)

 

Rnds 10-16: Rep Rnd 9.

 

Begin increase rounds:

 

Rnd 17: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in ea of next 5 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 5 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (77 hdc)

 

Rnd 18: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in ea of next 6 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 6 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (88 hdc)

 

Rnd 19: Ch 2, hdc in same st, 1 hdc in ea of next 7 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc in ea of next 7 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (99 hdc)

 

Rnd 20: Sl st in BLO of ea st around, join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

 

Drawstring tie:  Ch 135, fasten off.  Weave ch through last rnd before brim increases.  Slide 3 wood pony beads on each end of ch and tie ends of ch securely in knots.

 

To use as a hat:  Adjust chain and tie ends in a square knot, letting beaded ends dangle on the side as shown in photo.

 

To use as a bag: If desired, insert fabric lining or small plastic tub inside bag. Pull both ends of drawstring and tie in a bow as shown in photo, or use chain ends as a handle.
