700 yds. sport-weight baby yarn (Note: if a longer blanket is desired, additional yardage will be needed)

Sample shown in Loops & Threads Snuggly Wuggly Baby Sport (100% acrylic, 5 oz./141 g. skein, 446 yds/408 m per skein) in soft pink

Size I/9 (5.5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 13 sts & 8 rows = 4” in double crochet on size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook

Pattern notes:

Central portion of blanket is worked back and forth in rows from lower edge to top, then “bunny-ear” border is applied around all four sides.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 98, sc in 2^nd ch from hk, sk next ch, in next ch work (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc)(open shell completed), sk next ch, sc in next ch, *sk next ch, work open shell in next ch, sk next ch, sc in next ch, rep from * across, turn (24 shells)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 5, dc in sc at base of beg ch (beg half shell completed), *sc in center dc of next shell, work open shell in next sc, rep from * across to last shell, sc in center dc of last shell, in last sc work (dc, ch 1, dc)(half shell completed), turn (23 shells, 2 half shells)

Row 3 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first dc (i.e., the same st at base of beg sc), *work open shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell, rep from * across to last sc before last half shell, work open shell in this sc, sc in third ch of beg ch-5 of previous row, turn.

Rep Rows 2-3 until blanket measures approx. 27” from beg, ending with Row 2, turn.

Border:

With RS facing, work around all four sides of blanket as follows:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 62 sc evenly across top of blanket to first corner; work 3 sc in corner; pivot piece to work along left side; work 54 sc evenly along left side to next corner; work 3 sc in corner; pivot piece to work along opposite side of foundation ch; work 62 sc evenly across to next corner; work 3 sc in corner; pivot piece to work last side; work 54 sc evenly along side to next corner; work 3 sc in corner, join with sl st to beg sc (244 sc). Do not turn.

Rnd 2 (bunny-ear border): Ch 8, work bunny-ear as follows: sc in 2^nd ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, trc in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch (bunny-ear completed), sc in ea of next 2 sc on blanket edge, *ch 8, work bunny-ear as above, sc in ea of next 2 sc on blanket edge, rep from * around all four sides of blanket. When last bunny-ear is completed, join with sl st to base of first bunny-ear. Fasten off and weave in all tails.

Finishing: Lightly block blanket to finished measurements.
