CAT & THE HAT RIB CUFF BEANIE (crochet)

Skill level: Easy

Sizes: Teen/Adult (Child)

 

Materials:

190 yds. worsted-weight yarn in Color A

100 yds. worsted-weight yarn in Color B

Size J/10 (6 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 14 hdc = 4", 9 rows hdc = 4" with worsted weight yarn and size J/10 (6 mm) hook.

Stitches/Terms:  beginning (beg), chain (ch), front post half double crochet (fphdc), back post half double crochet (bphdc), half double crochet (hdc), increase (inc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st)

For front post half double crochet (fphdc):  Work half double crochet around post of stitch in row below, inserting hook from right to left and from front to back to front around post.

For back post half double crochet (bphdc): Work half double crochet around post of stitch in row below, inserting hook from right to left and from back to front to back around post.

Notes: Instructions are written for Teen/Adult size, with changes for child size as noted.  When working color changes, pull loop of new color through loop on hook, drop old color and continue with new color.  Do not cut colors until instructed to do so.

 

Beanie

Rnd 1:  With Color A, ch 4, join into ring, ch 2, work 11 hdc in ring, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2

(12 hdc)

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same st, work 2 hdc in ea hdc around, join with sl st, making color change at same time by drawing loop of Color B through top of beg ch-2, dropping Color A to back (24 hdc)

Rnd 3: With Color B, ch 1, sc in same st and ea hdc around, join with sl st, making color change by drawing loop of Color A through top of beg-ch 2, drop Color B to back (24 sc)

Rnd 4 (inc rnd): With Color A, ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next sc, *2 hdc in next sc, hdc in next sc, rep from * around, changing to Color B  when making sl st join (36 hdc)

Rnd 5: With Color B, ch 1, sc in same st and ea hdc around, changing to Color A when making sl st join (36 sc)

Rnd 6 (inc rnd): With Color A, ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in ea of next 2 sc, *2 hdc in next sc, hdc in ea of next 2 sc, rep from * around, changing to Color B when making sl st join (48 hdc)

Rnd 7: With Color B, ch 1, sc in same st and in ea hdc around, changing to Color A when making sl st join (48 sc)

For Child size: Cut Color B (leaving 6" tail for weaving in later) and continue with Color A on 48 sts as follows: 

Rnds 8-12: Ch 2, hdc in ea st around, join with sl st (48 hdc)  Skip to Rnd 14 for ribbed cuff.

For Teen/Adult size:  Cut Color B (leaving 6" tail for weaving in later) and continue with Color A as follows:

Rnd 8 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in ea of next 3 sc, *2 hdc in next sc, hdc in ea of next 3 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (60 hdc)

Rnd 9: Ch 2, hdc in ea hdc around (60 hdc)

Rnd 10 (inc rnd): Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in ea of next 4 hdc, *2 hdc in next hdc, hdc in ea of next 4 hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (72 hdc)

Rnds 11-13:  Ch 2, hdc in ea hdc around (72 hdc) Begin Ribbed Cuff:

NOTE: For child size: Work only 4 rounds of ribbing as follows, working 2 rounds in Color A and 2 rounds in Color B.

Rnd 14: Ch 2, work front post half double crochet (fphdc) around post of next hdc, *work back post half double crochet (bphdc) around post of next hdc, work front post half double crochet (fphdc) around post of next hdc, rep from * around, join with sl st (72 hdc)

Rnd 15:  Ch 2, work fphdc around fphdc, *work bphdc around bphdc, work fphdc around fphdc, rep from * around (72 hdc)

Rnds 16-17: Repeat Rnd 15, changing to Color B  at end of Rnd 17.  Cut Color A and continue with Color B.

Rnds 18-20: Ch 2, work fphdc around fphdc, work bphdc around bphdc, rep from * around. 

At end of Rnd 20, join with sl st, fasten off and weave in all ends.
