Reattach yarn in free loop on last row of "heart" and repeat Loop opening rows for second side of loop. Do not fasten off at end of last row, but continue as follows:

Join loop sides:

Ch 1, turn. Holding both loop pieces tog, sc across through both thicknesses (thus closing top of loop opening), ch 5, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 ch, sc across 7 sts (the sts that formed the loop closing), ch 5, turn, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 3 ch, sc in ea sc across (14 sc)

Next row: Ch 1, turn, inc in first sc, sc across to last sc, inc in last sc (16 sc)

Repeat last row until there are 24 sts. Work even in sc on 24 sts until piece measures 18" from beginning. Fasten off.

For 2-color scarf, make another piece in second color.

For 1-color scarf, make another piece in same color.

Finishing:

Heart edging:  With matching yarn, attach yarn at top edge of one heart piece (next to loop opening) and sc evenly around edge of heart, working 3 sc in point. Fasten off and weave in all ends. Hold straight edges of scarf pieces tog (to join them at center back) and whipstitch together so seam lies flat.

If necessary, lightly block scarf between damp towels so hearts lie flat.

Leave to dry in a place with good air circulation.

To wear, fold center portion of scarf in half lengthwise, place scarf around neck and insert one heart through ribbed loop section.
