Dazzling Waves Bag

Sparkling thread and an interesting wave pattern
worked side-to-side gives this dressy accessory a unique look. The
perfect touch for any special occasion!
Skill level: Intermediate
Finished size: 4.75” wide by 4.25” high
Materials:
Size 10 cotton metallic thread (100 yds (91 m.) per
ball)*:
1 ball color #403 Dazzling Cream (Color A)
1 ball color #401 Dazzling Diamonds (Color
B)
*Sample project was completed with Honeysuckle
Yarns Cotton Metallic from
Pisgah Yarn and Dyeing Co., Inc.
Size D/3/3.25 mm crochet hook, or size needed to
achieve gauge
Tapestry needle
Notions:
Piece of lining fabric 13” l. x 6” w.
Piece of non-fusible interfacing 13” l. x 6” w.
Sewing thread and sewing needle
One vintage button – 7/8” diameter
Gauge: 6 sc = 1”, 8 rows sc = 1 inch on size
D/3/3.25 mm hook
Pattern Notes
Bag is worked as a rectangular piece from
side-to-side in two-row stripes, then
folded and seamed at sides.
Right side of piece is the side that shows ridges
formed by working in back loops only on Row 3.
Stitches used: chain (ch), double crochet (dc), half
double crochet (hdc), reverse
single crochet (rev sc), single crochet (sc), slip
stitch (sl st)
Special stitches:
Back loop only (BLO): Work in back loop only of
single crochet stitches as
instructed in pattern.
Bag
Row 1 (RS): With Color A, ch 76, sc in 2nd
ch from hk and in ea ch across, turn (75 sc)
Row 2 (WS): Ch 3, dc in next 2 sc, *hdc in next 2 sc,
sc in next 2 sc, hdc in next
2 sc, dc in next 3 sc, rep from * across, changing to
Col B in last st, turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, working in BLO, sc in ea st across,
turn.
Row 4: Working in both lps as normal, ch 3, dc in
next 2 sc, *hdc in next 2 sc, sc in next 2 sc, hdc in next 2 sc, dc
in next 3 sc, rep from * across, changing to Col A in last st, turn.
Row 5: Rep Row 3.
Row 6: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sc, *hdc in next 2 sc, sc
in next 2 sc, hdc in next
2 sc, dc in next 3 sc, rep from * across, changing to
Col B in last st, turn.
Rep Rows 3-6 until a total of 26 rows have been
worked, alternating colors every two rows as established. Fasten
off and weave in tails.
Finishing
Inside edge trim:
Row 1: With right side facing and working along
short end of piece where color changes were made, attach Col B in st
at right corner. Ch 1, work 29 sc evenly across, turn (29 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across. Fasten off and weave
in tails.
Side seams:
With right sides tog, fold up short end of piece 4”
(i.e., the end that was just trimmed with Col B.) Sl st side seams
tog. Fasten off and weave in tails. Turn piece right side out.
Top flap:
At other short end of piece, fold down top edge 1”
and tack raw edge to inside of flap.
Button loop:
With 1 strand ea Col A & B held tog, attach thread
along fold of flap 2” in from side. Ch 7, skip 1” along fold and
attach ch at that point. Fasten off and weave in tails.
Strap:
With 1 strand ea Col A & B held tog, attach thread at
one side of bag where flap folds down. Ch 200, attach with sl st to
other side of bag. Fasten off and weave in tails.
Lining:
Cut piece of lining fabric to measure 11” long x
5.25” wide. Cut a piece of interfacing 10.5” long x 4.75” wide.
With right sides of lining tog, fold one short end up 4.25”. Fold
down raw edge ¼”, then sew side seams. Trim seams.
Insert interfacing into bag, then insert lining over
it. Adjust to fit. With sewing thread and needle, tack top edge of
lining to inside front of lower bag opening.
On inside of top flap, fold edges of lining under and
tack to crocheted piece along 3 sides.
Align button with button loop and sew securely to
front of bag.
