below) - approx. 25 (50, 50, 50) yds. of Color A, 50 (50,
75, 75) yds. Color B, 10 (20, 30, 30) yds. Color C
FOR SOLID COLOR HAT: 85 (120, 155, 155) yds. total
Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve
gauge

Gauge:
3 sts = 1", 3 rows = 1" in single crochet on size H hook

NOTES:
Carry colors loosely up inside of hat, fastening off when
no longer needed. Work slip stitch join at end of every
round, and begin each rnd with chain-1.
Hat
Rnd 1
(Color A): Chain 4, join into ring, work 6 single crochet in
ring (or use "loop around finger" technique for starting
ring, work 6 sc in ring, then pull to close when hat is
complete), join with sl st to first sc (6 sc)
Rnd 2
(Color A): Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in ea sc around, join
with sl st, changing to Col B (11 sc)
Rnd 3
(Color B): Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, 2 sc in ea sc around,
join with sl st (22 sc)
Rnd 4
(Color B): Ch 1, sc in first sc and in ea sc around, join
with sl st, changing to Col A (22 sc)
Rnd 5
(Color A): Ch 1, sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, *(sc in
next sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around, join with sl
st (33 sc)
Rnd 6
(Color A): Ch 1, sc in first sc and in ea sc around, join
with sl st (33 sc)
For BABY size, stop increases here. Change to Color B and
work even on 33 sts until hat measures 3-1/2" from center of
crown. Change to Color C (for border). Ch 2, hdc in ea sc
around, join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Rnd 7
(Color A): Ch 1, sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *(sc in
next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around, join with sl
st, changing to Col B (44 sc)
Rnd 8 (Color B): Ch 1, sc in first sc and in ea sc around,
join with sl st (44 sc)
For CHILD size, stop increases here. Work even on 44 sts
until hat measures 5" from center of crown. Change to Color
C (for border). Ch 2, hdc in ea sc around for 2 rnds,
joining with sl st at end of ea rnd and beginning ea new rnd
with ch-2. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Rnd 9
(Color B): Ch 1, sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *(sc in
next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around, join with sl
st (55 sc)
Rnd 10
(Color B): Ch 1, sc in first sc and in ea sc around, join
with sl st (55 sc)
For TEEN size, stop increases here. Work even on 55 sts
until hat measures 6-1/2" from center of crown. Change to
Color C (for border). Ch 2, hdc in ea sc around for 2 rnds,
joining with sl st at end of ea rnd and beginning ea new
rnd with ch-2. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Rnd 11
(Color B): Ch 1, sc in first 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *(sc in
next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc), rep from * around, join with
sl st, changing to Color A (66 sc)
Rnd 12
(Color A): Ch 1, sc in first sc and in ea sc around, join
with sl st (66 sc)
For ADULT size, stop increases here. Work 2 more rounds
Color A, then change to Color B and work even on 66 sts
until hat measures 8" from center of crown. Change to Color
C (for border). Ch 2, work hdc in ea sc around for 2 rnds,
joining with sl st at end of ea rnd and beginning ea new rnd
with ch-2. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional Brim Hat:
If rolled brim or turn-up cuff is desired, work single
crochet rounds for an additional 1, (1, 1-1/2, 2)" before
working hdc border rounds.
If desired, trim hat with pompoms, chain ties, bows,
tassels, braids or decorative buttons.
