275 yds. sport or DK-weight yarn (or combination of strands to equal sport or DK-weight) that works to gauge  
 

Sample hat was worked with 3 strands of a fine cotton/rayon cone yarn held together as one 
 

Size G/6 (4.25 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge 
 

Tapestry needle 
 

Gauge:  16 sc & 18 rnds = 4” in single crochet on size G/6 (4.25 mm) hook 
 

Pattern notes: 
 

Hat is worked from center of crown downward in spiral single crochet technique, then continued in joined rounds on brim.  
 

Brim shaping is achieved with sections of various stitch heights.

Note: Rounds on crown of hat are worked continuously in spiral single crochet.

DO NOT JOIN OR TURN at end of rounds, but continue in same direction. Use contrast yarn marker to note beginning of rounds. 
 

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Place contrast yarn marker to note beg of rnds and move it up as you work. 
 

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): Work 2 sc in ea sc around, do not join, do not turn (12 sc)  
 

Rnd 3 (inc rnd): Work 2 sc in ea sc around (24 sc)  
 

Rnd 4: Sc in ea sc around (24 sc)  
 

Rnd 5 (inc rnd): *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, rep from * around (36 sc)  
 

Rnd 6: Sc in ea sc around (36 sc)  
 

Rnd 7 (inc rnd): *2 sc in next sc, sc in ea of next 2 sc, rep from * around (48 sc) 
 

Rnd 8: Sc in ea sc around (48 sc)

Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as first dc & ch-1 sp), sk 1 sc, *dc in next sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, rep from * around, join with sl st to 3^rd ch of beg ch-4, do not turn (42 dc, 42 sps) 
 

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next sp, *sc in next dc, sc in next sp, rep from * around, join with sl st, do not turn (84 sc) 
 

Rnds 3-4: Ch 1, sc in same st and in ea sc around, join with sl st, do not turn (84 sc) 
 

Rep Rnds 1-4 of openwork section once. 
 

Begin brim shaping: 
 

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same sc and in ea of next 13 sc, dc in ea of next 14 sc, trc in ea of next 28 sc, dc in ea of next 14 sc, sc in ea of next 14 sc, join with sl st, do not turn (28 sc, 28 dc, 28 trc) 
 

Rnd 2 (inc rnd): Ch 1, sc in same st and in ea of next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in ea of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, [dc in ea of next 6 sts, 2 dc in next st] twice, [trc in ea of next 6 sts, 2 trc in next st] four times, [dc in ea of next 6 sts, 2 dc in next dc] twice, [sc in ea of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next sc] twice, join with sl st, do not turn (96 sts) 
 

Rnds 3-4: Ch 1, sc in same st and in ea of next 15 sts, dc in ea of next 16 sts, trc in ea of next 32 sts, dc in ea of next 16 sts, sc in ea of next 16 sts, join with sl st, do not turn (96 sts)
