Chain 20 (38) loosely, sc in second ch from hook and in ea ch across, turn -
19 (37) sc
Row 1: Ch 2, 2 dc in first sc, *ch 4, skip 5 sc, work 5 dc in next sc, rep
from *, ending last rep
with 3 dc in last sc, turn.
Row 2: Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), skip first 3 dc, *work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in
next 4-ch sp**, skip next 5 dc, rep from * across, ending last rep at **, skip 2

Row 4: Ch 5 (counts as 1 tr and 1 ch), 3 dc in same ch-1 sp, *skip 5 dc, work
(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-4 sp, rep from * across, ending with skip 5 dc,
work (3dc, ch1, trc) in top of turning ch, turn.
Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in same ch-1 sp, *ch 4, 5 dc in next ch-3
sp, rep from * across, ending with ch 4, 3 dc in top of turning ch, turn.
Repeat Rows 2-5 three (six) times -- 17 (29) rows total. Do not fasten off,
but ch 1 and turn.
Edging: Work 1 row sc evenly around all 4 sides of rectangle, working 3 sc in
ea corner. Be sure to have equal numbers of sc along top and bottom of
rectangles, as well as an equal number on both sides. To work across top evenly
(to match foundation row), work only 3 sc in ea ch-4 sp and 1 sc in ea of the
center 3 dc of ea 5-dc group. Make second piece to match.
Finishing: Following care instructions on the ball band of your chosen yarn,
block rectangles to measurements, spreading out lacy pattern on thick towels.
Cover with damp towels and leave to dry.
Joining (see diagram): Holding short end of one rectangle (B) wrong side
together with one long edge (A) of other rectangle, beginning at far right side
of long rectangle and working from right to left, slip st through inside loops
of scs on both pieces. Sl st until you reach the end of the short side, fasten
off, weave in ends. Repeat with other ends of rectangles, joining B to A. Finish
with 1 round sc worked evenly around neckline, fasten off and weave in ends.
Add fringe if desired: Prepare enough strands of fringe for each sc around
lower edge of poncho. Wrap yarn around a 5" or 6" measure as many times as
necessary, then cut at one end to form strands. Attach one strand of fringe in
ea sc around lower edge of poncho by inserting crochet hook into sc, fold strand
in half over hook, pull loop through fabric, then pull ends of fringe strands
through loop on hook. Pull to tighten knot. Trim fringe evenly all around
poncho.
