Spumoni Ice Scarf

A frosty soft confection of
a scarf to ward off winter’s chill (while dreaming of ice-cream
filled summer days!)

Approx. 7” wide x 64” long
Materials: TLC Baby Amore (weight 4 medium) (80% acrylic, 20% nylon)
– 140 g/5 oz ball, approx. 279 yds/255 m per ball
2 balls white (Main
color)(MC)
1 ball aqua (Color A)
1 ball pink (Color B)
Size
I/9 (5.5 mm) hook, or size needed to achieve gauge
Tapestry needle
Gauge:
3 sc = 1” on size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook
Pattern notes:
Scarf
is made in two sections worked from end to center back neck in order
to maintain orientation of spike stitches.
Cut
and rejoin Colors A and B as instructed, leaving 6” tails for
weaving in later. Do not cut Main Color until each half of
scarf is completed. At each color change when picking up Main Color
from rows below, strand it loosely up side of scarf.
When
working spike stitches, keep stitches loose enough to match tension
of rows below to avoid puckering.

half:
Row
1(RS): With MC, ch 22, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in ea ch
across, turn (21 sc)
Rows
2-8: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn. At end of Row 8, join Color A,
drop MC but do not cut it, turn.
Row 9
(RS): With Color A, ch 1, sc in first 2 sc; work spike stitches as
follows: hdc in next sc 1 row below, dc in next sc 2 rows below, trc
in next sc 3 rows below, dc in next sc 2 rows below, hdc in next sc
1 row below; sc in remaining 14 sc, turn (21 sts)
Row 10
(WS): Cont with Color A, ch 1, sc in ea st across. At end of row,
change to MC, drop and cut Color A, turn.
Row
11: Cont with MC, ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn.
Rows
12-18: Ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn. At end of Row 18, join
Color B, drop MC but do not cut it, turn.
Row 19
(RS): With Color B, ch 1, sc in 14 sc; work spike stitches as
follows: hdc in next sc 1 row below, dc in next sc 2 rows below, trc
in next sc 3 rows below, dc in next sc 2 rows below, hdc in next sc
1 row below; sc in last 2 sc, turn.
Row 20
(WS): Cont with Color B, ch 1, sc in ea st across. At end of row,
change to MC, drop and cut Color B, turn.
Row
21: Cont with MC, ch 1, sc in ea sc across, turn.
Rep
Rows 2-21 until piece measures 32”. Fasten off MC.
Second
half:
Rep
instructions for first half of scarf, starting with Color B (instead
of Color A) for first spike stitch stripe, then continuing to
alternate Colors A and B as on first half.
Finishing:
Holding two sections of scarf with right sides together, with MC
join through both thicknesses with slip stitch.

Edging:
Using
Color A to trim one end of scarf and Color B to trim other end,
attach yarn to opposite side of Row 1 (foundation chain row). *Ch 3,
dc in same st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, rep from * across. Fasten
off and weave in all tails.
