BELL-RUFFLE TODDLER HAT (knit)

Skill level: Intermediate

Size: 1-3 years

Finished measurements: Approx. 18” circumference, 7” high

Materials:

150 yds. worsted wt. wool, wool-blend, or cotton yarn (sample shown in Lamb’s Pride Worsted)

Size 8 (5 mm) circular needle (24” and 16” lengths) plus set of 4 (or 5) size 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles - or size needed to obtain gauge

28” satin ribbon (1/4” width) in color of choice

Gauge: 16 sts and 25 rows = 4 inches/10 cm in stockinette stitch on size 8 (5 mm) needles

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), decrease (dec), knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), purl (p), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), slip (sl), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)

Special Pattern Stitches:

Stockinette stitch worked circularly: Knit every round.

Pattern Notes:

Bell ruffle brim is worked back and forth in rows, then stitches are joined for circular knitting and work proceeds to decreases at crown. The small brim seam is sewn when hat is complete.

Hat

With longer circular needle, cast on 192 sts.

Begin bell ruffle brim:

Row 1 (RS): *K9, p3, rep from * to end.

Row 2 (WS): *K3, p9, rep from * to end.

Begin decreases:

Row 3 (dec row): *Sl 1 with yarn in back, k1, psso, k5, k2tog, p3, rep from * to end (160 sts)

Row 4: *K3, p7, rep from * to end.

Row 5 (dec row): *Sl 1 with yarn in back, k1, psso, k3, k2tog, p3, rep from * to end (128 sts)

Row 6: *K3, p5, rep from * to end.

Row 7 (dec row): *Sl 1 with yarn in back, k1, psso, k1, k2tog, p3, rep from * to end (96 sts)

Row 8: *K3, p3, rep from * to end.

Row 9 (dec row): *Sl 1 with yarn in back, k2tog, psso, p3, rep from * to end (64 sts)

Row 10: *K3, p1, rep from * to end (bell edging completed - 16 bells)

Begin body of hat:

Rnd 1 (RS): Changing to 16” circular needle, knit across. At end of row, join for circular knitting. Place marker to note beg of rnds.

Rnd 2: Purl.

Rnd 3: Knit.

Rnd 4 (eyelet rnd): *K2tog, yo, K2, rep from * around.

Rnd 5: Knit.

Rnd 6: Purl.

Rnd 7: Knit.

Rep Rnd 7 until hat measures 5” from eyelet rnd (Rnd 4).

Beg crown decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle)

Rnd 1 (dec rnd): *K6, K2tog, rep from * around (56 sts)

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3 (dec rnd): *K5, K2tog, rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5 (dec rnd): *K4, K2tog, rep from * around (40 sts)

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7 (dec rnd): *K3, K2tog, rep from * around (32 sts)

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9 (dec rnd): *K2, K2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 10 (dec rnd): *K1, K2tog, rep from * around (16 sts)

Rnd 11 (dec rnd): *K2tog, rep from * around (8 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail, gather sts tog and pull gently to close. Weave in tails.

Finishing

Sew seam on bell ruffle brim. Weave length of ribbon through eyelet round and tie in a bow.
