Sock is worked from top of cuff down to toe. Pattern is written for arranging stitches on 4 needles and knitting with a 5th needle. When instructed to slip sts, slip them purlwise, except when working SSK (see Special Stitches above)
Sock (make 2)
Cuff: CO loosely 56 (60, 6 4, 68) sts, placing 14, (15, 16, 17) sts on ea of 4 needles.
Join for working in the round and begin knitting with 5th needle (place marker to note beginning of round, or use beginning yarn tail as a guide to where each round starts.)
Rnds 1-10 (1-12, 1-14, 1-16) (ribbing): *K2, P2, rep from * around. Leg: Switch to stockinette st in the round (i.e., knit every round.) Knit around until piece measures desired length of leg:
for a super-short sock - 4" from beginning of cuff for a short sock - 5" from beginning of cuff for a medium sock - 6" from beginning of cuff for a longer sock - 7" or 8" from beginning of cuff
Divide for heel flap: K 14 (15, 16, 17) onto same needle just worked so that there are 28 (30, 32, 34)
sts on one needle (leave the 14, (15, 16, 17) sts on each of remaining 2 needles unworked; these are instep sts to be worked later.)
Turn work. Heel flap: Row 1 (W S): Sl 1, P across, turn work.
Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, K 1, *sl 1, k1, rep from * across, turn work. Rep Rows 1 & 2 until heel flap measures 2" (2.5", 2.5", 3"), ending having just
finished a wrong-side row. Turn heel: Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, K across until 10 sts remain, K2tog, K1, turn work. Row 2 (W S): Sl 1, P across until 10 sts remain, P2tog, P1, turn work. Row 3 (RS): Sl 1, K across until 1 st remains before the "gap" that was formed by
turning work partway through the previous row, K2tog, K1, turn work. Row 4 (W S): Sl 1, P across until 1 st remains before the "gap" that was formed
by turning work partway through the previous row, P2tog, P1, turn work. Rep Rows 3 & 4 until only 1 st remains left to be worked outside each "gap",
ending having just finished a wrong-side row. Next row (RS): Sl 1, K to last 2 sts, K2tog, turn work. Next row (W S): Sl 1, P to last 2 sts, P2tog, turn work. Begin gusset: Rnd 1: K to get to center of heel. W ith empty ndl (this will be Needle #1), K across remaining sts on heel needle; with same needle, pick up 14 (15, 16, 17) sts along side of heel flap. W ith empty ndl (this will be Needle #2), knit across sts on first instep ndl. W ith empty ndl (this will be Needle #3), knit across sts on second instep ndl. W ith empty ndl (this will be Needle #4), pick up 14 (15, 16, 17) sts along other side of heel flap, knit to center of heel (you are back at beginning of rnd.) Note: From this point on, work proceeds in rounds that begin and end at center back of heel. Begin gusset decreases: Decrease round: On Ndl #1, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1.
On Ndl #2, K across. On Ndl #3, K across. On Ndl #4, K1, ssk, knit to end of rnd (you are back at center of heel.) Next round: Knit even. Rep last 2 rounds(alternating a decrease rnd with a plain rnd) until there are 14 (15, 16, 17) sts on each of the 4 needles and you are back to the original 56 (60, 64, 68) sts.
Knit around until foot from back of heel measures 1.5" (1.5", 2", 2") less than desired total length. Toe: Decrease round: On Ndl #1, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. On Ndl #2, K1, ssk, K across. On Ndl #3, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1. On Ndl #4, K1, ssk, knit to end of round. (4 sts have been decreased) Next round: Knit even. Rep last 2 rounds (alternating a decrease rnd with a plain rnd) 4 (4, 5, 5) times. Complete toe: W ork decrease round on every round 5 (5, 6, 6) times.
Knit to end of needle so that working yarn is a t side of toe. Cut yarn, leaving 12" tail. Divide remaining sts, placing half on ea of 2 dpns. Graft sts with Kitchener stitch. Weave in all tails.
Cast on for second sock immediately!
Continue the K2 P2 ribbing throughout the entire cuff/leg portion of sock, then switch to all stockinette st for remainder of sock.
Add a stitch pattern of your choice to the leg portion. After working the K2 P2 ribbed cuff, work in a stitch pattern that has a multiple of 4 and compatible for working in the round (e.g., knit & purl patterns, simple twist stitches, easy lace)
If using a solid color yarn, add contrast stripes in colors of your choice !
When sock is complete, duplicate-stitch initials or other designs on the leg as desired.
Crochet flower embellishments or other trims and attach to cuff or leg.
Enjoy knitting your Choice of Options socks!
