Size: Approx. 21” circ. by 8” high (unstretched) – will stretch to fit up to 24” head circumference


125 yds. super-bulky  yarn

Sample shown in Plymouth Encore “Mega” (75% acrylic, 25% wool, 64 yds/100g ball)

Size 13 US (9 mm) circular knitting needle (16” length) – or size needed to achieve gauge

Set of 4 (or 5) size 13 US (9 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns)

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 10 sts & 12 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch on size 13 US (9 mm) needles

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), purl (p), repeat (rep), round (rnd), stitch (st), together (tog)

Pattern notes:  Hat is worked in the round from lower edge to crown. Garter stitch on brim and crown is achieved by alternating knit and purl rounds.


With circular needle, CO 42. Join for knitting in the round, being careful that sts are not twisted. Place marker to note beg of rnds.

Rnd 1: K.

Rnd 2: P.

Rnds 3-6: Rep Rnds 1-2.


Begin pattern:

Rnds 1-4: *K3, p3, rep from * around.

Rnds 5-8: *P3, k3, rep from * around.

Rnds 9-12: *K3, p3, rep from * around.

Rnds 13-16: *P3, k3, rep from * around.

Rnd 17: K.

At end of Rnd 17, piece measures approx. 6” from beg.


Begin crown decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle):

Rnd 1: *K5, k2tog, rep from * around (36 sts)

Rnd 2: P.

Rnd 3: *K4, k2tog, rep from * around (30 sts)

Rnd 4: P.

Rnd 5: *K3, k2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 6: P.

Rnd 7: *K2, k2tog, rep from * around (18 sts)

Rnd 8: *K1, k2tog, rep from * around (12 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail. Gather rem sts tog and cinch to close.  Weave in ends.
