notes:
Neckpiece is worked in the round on dpns from narrow end to narrow

on front (outside) and smooth stockinette on back (inside).
Buttonhole is incorporated in both thicknesses at end of piece.
Special
stitches:
Three-needle bindoff (3-ndl BO): Place equal number of sts on 2 dpns.
Holding ndls together, with a third dpn bind off through both
thicknesses by inserting needle through st on front needle & st on
back needle and binding off in the usual manner.
Neckpiece
Leaving
12 tail at beg (for use later), CO 15 onto dpns, arranging sts
thus: 4 sts on Ndl #1, 7 sts on Ndl #2, 4 sts on Ndl #3.
Knit 1
rnd.
Begin
pattern:
Rnd 1:
K4, p2, k3, p2, k4.
Rnd 2:
K4, p2, k1, p1, k1, p2, k4.
Rep Rnds
1-2 until piece measures 20 from beg.
Note: to
create buttonholes in both thicknesses, work proceeds back and forth
in rows as follows:
Buttonhole row: K4, p2, k1, yo wrapping yarn around ndl twice,
k2tog, p2, k4, turn work.
Next
row: P4, k2, p1, k1 dropping extra yo loop, p1, k2, p4, turn work.
Resume
working in rnds:
Next rnd:
Rep Rnd 2.
Next rnd
(dec rnd): Rep Rnd 1, ending with k2, k2tog instead of K4 (14 sts)
For
bind-off, knit across first 4 sts of next rnd, then place 7 sts of
front (textured side) on one dpn and 7 sts of back (stockinette
side) on second dpn. Work 3-ndl BO (see Special stitches above.)
Cut yarn and weave in tail.
Finishing:
Using
cast-on tail, close cast-on opening by whipstitching through each
cast-on lp around, pull tail gently to close. Sew button to front
of this end of piece.
To
wear: Place piece around neck and push button through both
thicknesses of buttonhole opening.
