 Knit with Crochet Patterns  

 

     

 

 

CHIC HAT & SCARF SET

Skill level:  Easy

 

Sizes:  Scarf: approx. 4" w. x 52" l.

           Hat: approx. 20" circumference x 9" high

Materials:

200 yds. heavy worsted wt. wool or wool-blend (sample shown in Noro Big Kureyon 100% wool) – main color (MC)

50 yds. novelty yarn (sample trimmed in Berroco Zap polyester eyelash) – contrast color (CC)

Size 11 straight and circular needles (16" length) and set of 4 (or 5) size 11 double-pointed needles

Tapestry needle

Gauge:  3 sts = 1" in stockinette stitch on size 11 needles

Pattern notes:  If novelty yarn used is thin, work with a double strand to equal thickness of single strand of wool or wool-blend used for main portion of hat and scarf.

 

Hat

With size 11 circular needles and 1strand MC, cast on 60 sts loosely.  Join into round, being careful not to twist. Place marker to note beginning of rounds.

Knit 1 round.

Drop MC, attach double strand of CC.

With CC, knit 1 round.

With CC, purl 1 round.

With CC, knit 1 round.

Drop CC and pick up strand of MC.

With MC, knit 1 round. Cut CC, leaving 6" tail for weaving in. Continue with MC for remainder of hat.

Knit 4 rounds.

*Purl 1 round.

Knit 5 rounds.

Rep from * until 24 rounds have been worked (4 ridges with 5 plain rounds between).

Begin decreases (Note: change to dpns when stitches no longer fit comfortably on circular needle.)

Dec Round 1: *K4, K2 tog, rep from * around (50 sts)

Knit 1 round even.

Dec Round 2: *K3, K2 tog, rep from * around (40 sts)

Knit 1 round even.

Dec Round 3: *K2, K2 tog, rep from * around (30 sts)

Knit 1 round even.

Dec Round 4: *K1, K2 tog, rep from * around (20 sts)

Knit 1 round even.

Dec Round 5: K2 tog around (10 sts)

Knit 1 round even

Dec Round 6: K2 tog around (5 sts)

Gather sts together at top of hat and weave in tails.

Scarf

With size 11 needles and 1 strand MC, cast on 12 sts.

Knit 1 row.

Drop MC but carry strand loosely up side of work over next 4 rows. Join double strand of CC and knit across.

Knit 3 more rows with CC. Drop CC, pick up MC and continue in scarf pattern with MC only.

Scarf pattern:

Row 1 (right side):  Knit.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: Knit.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: Knit.

Row 6: Knit.

Rep Rows 1-6 until scarf measures approx. 50", or desired length, ending on Row 5.

Drop MC and attach double strand of CC.

Knit 4 rows with CC. Drop CC and pick up MC.

Knit 1 row. Bind off loosely, cut yarns and weave in ends.

Finishing: You can choose to let scarf roll naturally, forming a tube scarf, or lightly block scarf flat.

If using eyelash-style yarn for CC, shake scarf and hat gently to fluff up trim.
