HOLIDAY DECORATIONS (knit)

Colorful tree ornaments or package tie-ons:

stocking, hat, tree, candy cane, and sweater

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Approx. 2-1/2" to 3-1/2" long

Materials:

Sport-weight yarn - 1 ball each red, green, white will make several ornaments

Gold metallic carry-along thread - 1 spool

Chenille stem for candy cane, assorted trims if desired

Size 3 (3.25 mm) and 6 (4.25 mm) dpns

Size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook

Tapestry needle

Gauge: not important for this project

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), decrease (dec), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), increase (inc), place marker (pm), repeat (rep), slip slip knit (ssk), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)

Pattern notes: Use a strand of the metallic carry-along thread for the hanging loop by threading it through top of ornament and tying in a knot to secure.

Little Striped Stocking

With size 3 dpns and red, CO 20 sts. Join and work K2 P2 rib for 4 rounds.

Join green/gold carry-along. Cut red.

Knit 4 rounds green/gold. Drop green/gold but do not cut. Join white/gold.

Knit 4 rounds white/gold.

Knit 4 rounds green/gold. Cut green/gold and white/gold.

Place 10 sts on one needle for heel flap. Join red and knit 1 row, turn.

Begin heel flap:

Slip 1, purl 9, turn.

Slip 1, knit 9, turn.

Rep last 2 rows twice.

Slip 1, purl 9, turn (total 8 rows in heel flap)

Turn heel:

K2tog, K6, K2 tog, turn (8 sts)

Purl across.

K2 tog, K4, K2 tog (6 sts)

Purl across.

With white/gold, knit across sts of heel flap, then pick up 6 sts along side of heel flap.

With empty needle, knit across 10 instep sts. With 3rd needle, pick up 6 sts along other side of heel flap and knit to center of heel.

Gusset:

Decrease round:

K to last 3 sts on ndl 1, K2tog, K1.

K across sts on ndl 2.

K1, SSK, knit across sts on ndl 3.

**Knit 1 round even.

Rep decrease round.

Join green/gold combo, drop white/gold.

Rep from ** until the original 20 sts remain.

Knit around on 20 sts, working a total of 4 rounds green/gold, 4 rounds white/gold. Cut green/gold and white/gold.

Toe: Join red at center of heel.

Knit one round even.

Decrease round:

Knit to last 3 sts on ndl 1, K2tog, K1; on ndl 2, K1, SSK, work across to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1 ; on ndl 3, SSK, knit to center of heel.

Rep last 2 rounds until 8 sts remain.

Gather sts together and finish off. Weave in ends. Attach hanging loop to top of sock.

Santa Hat

With size 3 dpns and white, CO 20 sts, join into round.

Knit 1 round.

Purl 1 round.

Knit 1 round.

Purl 1 round. Cut white. Join red/gold.

Knit around on 20 sts for 3 rounds.

Next round: *K3, K2 tog, rep from * around.

Work 3 rounds even.

Next round: *K2, K2tog, rep from * around.

Work 3 rounds even.

Next round: *K1, K2tog, rep from * around.

Work 3 rounds even.

Next round: K2tog around. Gather remaining sts and fasten off.

Attach white pompom to point of hat. Add hanger.

Holiday Tree

With size 3 dpns and green/gold, CO 24 sts, join into round.

Knit 1 round.

Purl 1 round.

Knit 1 round.

Purl 1 round.

Knit 1 round.

Dec round: *K4, K2 tog, rep from * around.

**Purl 1 round.

Knit 1 round.

Purl 1 round.

Knit 1 round.**

Dec round: *K3, K2 tog, rep from * around.

Rep from ** to ** once.

Dec round: *K2, K2 tog, rep from * around.

Rep from ** to ** once.

Dec round: *K1, K2 tog, rep from * around.

Gather rem sts together and fasten off. Add hanger. Trim as desired.

I-Cord Candy Cane

Note: To work I-cord, K5, slide sts to right end of needle, pull yarn from behind, K5. Rep over and over to form I-cord.

With size 6 dpns and two strands red held together, CO 5 sts.

Work in I-cord for 4 rounds. Drop red but do not cut, join 2 strands white.

Continue with I-cord, alternating 2 rounds white, 2 rounds red.

Repeat until cord is about 5" long (Note: pull new color up from under old color to avoid holes in work.) Finish with 4 rounds red. BO all sts.

Fold a chenille stem (pipecleaner) in half to form double-thickness and insert into I-cord tube (inserting a pencil into I-cord first will help open cord enough to insert chenille stem). Sew ends of cord closed and secure to inside. Bend top to form candy cane.

Little Sweater

With size 3 needles and white/gold combo, CO 15 sts.

Work in seed st (K1, P1) across.

Next row: Work in seed st across (knit the purls and purl the knits as they face you).

Continue in seed st for 8 rows.

Sleeves: CO 8 sts by backwards loop method (i.e., make backwards loop over thumb and place this new st on right needle.) Turn and knit across 8 cast-on sts and across 15 sweater sts, CO 8 sts for other sleeve (31 sts total)

Knit 6 rows.

Neck: Knit across 12 sts, join second strand of yarn and bind off center 7 sts, knit across rem 12 sts.

Working both shoulders at same time, knit across next row.

Next row: Knit across 12 sts, CO 7 sts over bound off sts at center, work across 12 sts (31 sts)

Knit 6 rows.

Next row: BO 8 sts of sleeve, knit across 15 sts, BO 8 sts of other sleeve.

Rejoin yarn to rem 15 sweater sts and seed stitch for 9 rows. BO all sts.

Sew side and sleeve seams. Work 1 row single crochet around neck and lower edge. Add hanger. Fold back sleeve cuffs.
