Skill level:   Easy+ to Intermediate

Size:  3-6 mos. – 15” circumference, 6.5” high (unstretched)

Materials:

Soft worsted wt. yarn (sample shown in Caron “Simply Soft” – 100% acrylic,      157 yds/3 oz skein):

75 yds. Main Color (MC)(lavender)

20 yds. Color A (white)

10 yds. Color B (plum)

Size 8 (5 mm) circular needle (16” length) – or size needed to achieve gauge

Set of 4 (or 5) size 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needles (dpns)

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 18 sts & 24 rows = 4” in stockinette stitch on size 8 (5 mm) needle

Terms/Abbreviations:  beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), decrease (dec), increase (inc), knit (k), knit two together (K2tog), purl (p), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), slip (sl), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st)

Pattern notes: 

Hat is worked in the round from lower edge to top.

Fair Isle band is worked from a chart. Be sure to strand colors very loosely across back of work to avoid puckering.

At each color change, pick up new color strand from under old color strand to avoid holes.

Do not cut colors until instructed to do so. Carry unused strands loosely up inside of hat.

Hat

With circular needle and MC, CO 64.  Join for knitting in the round, being careful that stitches are not twisted. Place marker to note beginning of rounds.

Rnds 1-4: With MC, *k2, p2, rep from * around.

Rnds 5-8: K.

Rnd 9: K, increasing one st at end of rnd (65 sts).  Join Color A.  Cut MC, leaving 6” tail to weave in later.

Begin chart:

Rnd 1: With Color A, k.

Rnds 2-13: Work Fair Isle design according to chart, stranding Colors A & B very loosely behind work.

At end of Rnd 13 of chart, drop and cut Colors A & B, leaving 6” tails for weaving in later.  Continue remainder of hat with MC.

Rnds 14-17: With MC, k.  At end of Rnd 17, hat measures approx. 4.5” from cast-on edge.

Begin crown decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle):

Rnd 1 (dec rnd): K, decreasing one st at end of rnd (64 sts)

Rnd 2: K.

Rnd 3 (dec rnd): *K6, k2tog, rep from * around (56 sts)

Rnd 4: K.

Rnd 5 (dec rnd): *K5, k2tog, rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 6: K.

Rnd 7 (dec rnd): *K4, k2tog, rep from * around (40 sts)

Rnd 8: K.

Rnd 9 (dec rnd): *K3, k2tog, rep from * around (32 sts)

Rnd 10 (dec rnd): *K2, k2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 11 (dec rnd): *K1, k2tog, rep from * around (16 sts)

Rnd 12 (dec rnd): *K2tog, rep from * around (8 sts).

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail. Gather remaining sts together and pull gently to close top.  Weave in all tails.
