Size: One size: approximately 20" circumference (unstretched) by 9" high (to crown) plus 2.5" extension-- hat will stretch to fit up to 23” circumference

Materials:

100 yds. super-bulky wt. yarn    in Main Color (MC) -- Fire Mix

80 yds. super-bulky wt. yarn  in Contrast Color A (CCA) -- Neon Orange

60 yds. super-bulky wt. yarn  in Contrast Color B (CCB) -- Neon Pink

 

Sample hat shown in Schachenmayr “Bravo Big” (100% acrylic, 131 yds/120 m per 7 oz/200 g ball) in colors #08279 Neon Orange (CCA), #08234 Neon Pink (CCB) and Schachenmayr "Bravo Big Color" in #00085 Fire Mix (MC)

 

Circular knitting needle (20" to 24" length) in size US 13 (9 mm), or size needed to achieve gauge

Circular knitting needle (16" length) or set of 4 double-pointed needles (dpns) in size US 13 (9 mm)

Crochet hook in size US K/10.5 (6.5 mm)

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

Pompom maker

Gauge: 8 sts & 12 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette st on size US 13 (9 mm) needles

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), each (ea), knit (k), knit two together (k2tog), needle (ndl), pattern (patt), purl (p), remaining (rem), repeat (rep), round (rnd), slip (sl), stitch (st), together (tog)

 

Pattern notes:

Hat is knit in the round from lower edge to top.

When changing colors, pick up new color from under old color to avoid holes. Cut and join colors as instructed.

Hat

With circular ndl and CCB, CO 36, join for knitting in the round. Place marker to note beg of rnds. 

Rnd 1: K.

Rnd 2: P.

Join CCA, drop and cut CCB, leaving 6" tails for weaving in.

Rnd 3: With CCA, k.

Begin diamond pattern:

Rnd 1: Cont with CCA, k4, *p1, k8, rep from * to last 5 sts, p1, k4.

Rnd 2: K3, *p3, k6, rep from * to last 6 sts, p3, k3.

Rnd 3: K2, *p5, k4, rep from * to last 7 sts, p5, k2.

Rnd 4: K1, *p7, k2, rep from * to last 8 sts, p7, k1.

Rnd 5: P.

Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 4.

Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 9: Rep Rnd 1.

Rnd 10: K.

Join CCB, drop and cut CCA, leaving 6" tails for weaving in.

Rnd 11: With CCB, k.

Rnd 12: P.

Rnd 13: K. 

Join MC, drop and cut CCB, leaving 6" tails for weaving in.

Cont with MC, k around until length of hat from cast-on edge measures 7".

Begin decreases (Note: if necessary, change to shorter circ ndl or dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on longer circular ndl):

Rnd 1 (dec rnd): Cont with MC, *k4, k2tog, rep from * around -- 30 sts.

Rnd 2: K.

Rnd 3 (dec rnd): *K3, k2tog, rep from * around -- 24 sts.

Rnds 4-5: K.

Rnd 6 (eyelet rnd): *K2, yo, k2tog, rep from * around..

Rnds 7-10: K.

Join CCB, drop and cut MC, leaving 6" tails for weaving in.

Rnd 11: With CCB, k.

Rnd 12: P.

Rnd 13: K.

BO in purl.

Tie:

With crochet hook and CCA, work a chain 20" long. Cut yarn and weave through eyelet round.

Pompom trim:

Using all 3 colors, make two pompoms. Attach one pompom to each end of crochet chain.

Finishing:

Pull crochet chain gently to close top of hat and tie in a bow as shown.

Weave in ends.
