Skill level: Intermediate

Size: Teen/Adult – loose-fitting style - approx. 22”-23” circumference

Materials:

190 yds. worsted wt. multicolor mohair-blend yarn (sample shown in King Cole

“Luxury Mohair”, 78% mohair/13% wool/9% nylon)

Size 10 circular needle (16” length)

Set of 4 size 10 double-pointed needles (dpns)

Stitch marker

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 11 sts & 16 rows = 4” with worsted wt. mohair yarn on size 10 ndl.

Pattern notes: Hat is worked in seamless method on circular needle from lower edge to crown. Stitches are increased and decreased to form “bubbles”.

Note on fit: Hat sits loosely on head. Because of the fluffy mohair-blend recommended, it is lightweight and not a hair crusher!

Special stitches:

Make one (M1) increase: place thumb behind working yarn and twist it into a loop, then place this “backwards” loop on to right needle. On next round, knit into the front of this new stitch.

K2tog: knit two stitches together

Hat

CO 64 sts, join into round for circular knitting, being careful that sts are not twisted on needle. Place marker to note beginning of round.

Lower rib:

Rnds 1-6: *K1, P1, rep from * around (64 sts)

Begin hat body:

Rnd 7: K.

Rnd 8 (inc rnd): *K1, M1, rep from * around (128 sts)

Rnds 9-15: K.

Rnd 16 (dec rnd): *K2tog, rep from * around (64 sts)

Rnds 17-19: K.

Rnds 20-31: Rep Rnds 8-19.

Rnd 32: K (64 sts)

Begin crown decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle)

Rnd 33 (dec rnd): *K6, K2tog, rep from * around (56 sts)

Rnd 34: K.

Rnd 35 (dec rnd): *K5, K2tog, rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 36: K.

Rnd 37 (dec rnd): *K4, K2tog, rep from * around (40 sts)

Rnd 38: K.

Rnd 39 (dec rnd): *K3, K2tog, rep from * around (32 sts)

Rnd 40: K.

Rnd 41 (dec rnd): *K2, K2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 42: K.

Top knot:

Rnd 43: *K1, M1, rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 44: K.

Rnd 45: *K2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 46: K.

Rnd 47: *K2tog, rep from * around (12 sts)

Rnd 48: K.

Rnd 49: *K2tog, rep from * around (6 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving 8” tail. Gather sts tog and close top. Weave in tails.
