Skill level: Intermediate

Size: Approx. 14" wide x 52" long

Materials:

840 yds. soft sport wt. yarn (sample shown in Lion Brand “Microspun” 100% microfiber acrylic – 168 yds/ball)

Size 10 (6 mm) needles (straight or circular) – or size to achieve gauge

Two size 8 (5 mm) dpns

Stitch markers

Row counter

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 16 sts & 24 rows = 4" in stockinette stitch on size 10 (6 mm) needles

Stitches/Terms: bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (k), pass slipped stitch over (psso), place marker (pm), purl (p), repeat (rep), skip (sk), slip (sl), stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st), yarn over (yo)

Pattern notes:

When instructed to slip stitches, slip them purlwise.

Keep 5 sts each side in garter stitch (knit every row).

Use markers to note edge sts; slip markers every row.

A row counter is useful for keeping track of rows in this pattern.

Shawl

Cast on 63 stitches.

Knit 6 rows (3 ridges)

Begin lace pattern:

Row 1 (RS): Sl 1, k 4, pm, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, *k3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, rep from * to last 5 sts, pm, k 5.

Row 2 (WS): Sl 1, k 4, sl marker, p across to last 5 sts, sl marker, k 5.

Row 3: Sl 1, k 4, sl marker, k across to last 5 sts, sl marker, k 5.

Row 4: Sl 1, k 4, sl marker, p across to last 5 sts, sl marker, k 5.

Row 5: Sl 1, k 4, sl marker, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, *k3, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, sl 1, k1, psso, rep from * to last 5 sts, sl marker, k 5.

Row 6: Sl 1, k 4, sl marker, p across to last 5 sts, sl marker, k 5.

Repeat Rows 3-6 until shawl measures 40” (Note: lace borders will add 12” to length of shawl)

Knit 6 rows (3 ridges). Bind off loosely and weave in tails.

Applied Lace Border

(Worked back & forth in rows sideways using attach-as-you-go method.

Turn work at end of each row.)

With double-pointed needles, cast on 20 sts. With right side (public side) of shawl facing, join cast-on sts to one short end of shawl by picking up 1 st in first st at right-edge corner (21 sts)

Next row: K2tog, k across (20 sts)

Begin patt:

Row 1 (RS): K across, pick up 1 st in next bound-off (or cast-on) st on end of shawl (21 sts)

Row 2 (WS): K2tog, k3, (yo, k2tog)7 times, yo, k2 (21 sts)

Row 3 (RS): K across, pick up 1 st in next bound-off (or cast-on) st on end of shawl.

Row 4 (WS)(inc row): K2tog, k6, (yo, k2tog)6 times, yo, k2 (22 sts)

Row 5 (RS): K across, pick up 1 st in next bound-off (or cast-on) st on end of shawl.

Row 6 (WS)(inc row): K2tog, k9, (yo, k2tog)5 times, yo, k2 (23 sts)

Row 7 (RS): K across, pick up 1 st in next bound-off (or cast-on) st on end of shawl.

Row 8 (WS)(inc row): K2tog, k12, (yo, k2tog)4 times, yo, k2 (24 sts)

Row 9 (RS): K across, pick up 1 st in next bound-off (or cast-on) st on end of shawl.

Row 10 (WS): K2tog, k23 (24 sts)

Row 11 (RS)(dec row): Bind off 4 sts, k19, pick up 1 st in next bound-off (or cast-on) st on end of shawl.

Rep Rows 2-11 along end of shawl to last bound-off (or cast-on) st, ending with Row 11 worked into last st (Note: each repeat of Rows 2-11 uses 4 or 5 sts of the shawl bound-off (or cast-on) edge, so you can plan ahead in order to fit the last few repeats in to achieve a total of 12 or 13 points on border.)

Last row: Bind off all sts loosely, cut yarn and weave in tails.

Repeat Applied Lace Border on other short end of shawl.

Finishing: If desired, lightly block shawl by gently dampening it and laying it out on a towel-covered surface. Stretch out lace pattern evenly. Cover with more towels and leave to dry.
