Heart-to-Heart Cotton Neck Scarf (knit version)

Skill Level:  Easy

 

Size:  Approx. 4.5” wide x 33” long

 

Materials:

75 yds. each of 2 colors of DK or WW cotton - OR - 150 yds. total for one-color scarf (sample shown in Tahki "Cotton Classic")

Size 6 (4.25 mm) straight needles plus 1 extra size 6 (4.25 mm) dpn

Stitch holder

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:  5 sts = 1”, 10 rows = 1” in garter stitch on size 6 (4.25 mm) needles

Terms/Abbreviations: bind off (BO), cast on (CO), decrease (dec),  garter stitch (knit every row), increase(inc), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), repeat (rep), stitch (st)

Pattern notes: Increases are worked 1 stitch in from each edge. To work increase, knit into front and back of stitch (k f & b).

Scarf

Cast on 1.

Row 1 (wrong side): Knit into front and back of stitch (increase complete) (2)

Row 2 (right side): Knit into front and back of both stitches (4)

Row 3: Knit 1 row even (4)

Row 4: K1, increase in each of next 2 sts, K1 (6)

Row 5: Knit 1 row even (6)

Row 6: K1, inc, K2, inc, K1 (8)

Row 7: Knit 1 row even (8)

Row 8: K1, inc, K4, inc, K1 (10)

Row 9: Knit 1 row even (10)

Row 10: K1, inc, knit to last 2 sts, inc, K1 (12)

Repeat last 2 rows (1 row even followed by an increase row) until there are a total of 24 sts.

Knit on 24 sts until piece measures 3-1/2” from beginning point.

Decrease to form heart as follows:

Row 1: (K2tog) four times, K8, (K2tog) four times (16)

Row 2: Knit 1 row even (16)

Row 3: (K2tog) three times, K4, (K2tog) three times (10)

Row 4: Knit 1 row even (10)

Row 5: K2, P2 across (10)

Row 6: P2, K2 across (10)

Continue in K2, P2 rib until ribbed portion measures 2”.  Place sts on holder.

From back side of ribbed portion, with separate strand of yarn, pick up 10 sts from last garter st row before start of ribbed section, and work K2, P2 rib for 2”.

Join ribbed sections:  Place 10 sts from each ribbed section on separate needles.  Holding needles together, knit 1 from front needle together with 1 from back needle and repeat across (10).  The ribbed portion is now joined at the top, thus forming the loop through which the heart portion will go when the scarf is worn.

Increase back to 24 sts as follows:

Next row: Knit 1 row even (10)

Next row (right side): K1, inc in ea of next 3 sts, K2, inc in ea of next 3 sts, K1 (16)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (16)

Next row: K1, inc in ea of next 4 sts, K6, inc in ea of next 4 sts, K1 (24)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (24)

For 2-color scarf:

Knit even on 24 sts until center portion of scarf measures 9”.  Change to new color and knit for an additional 9” (total of 18” from ribbed section). Continue with decrease row below.

 

For 1-color scarf:

 

Knit even on 24 sts until center portion measures 18” from ribbed section. Continue with decrease row below.

Decrease row:

Decrease for beginning of second ribbed section as follows:

Next row: K1, (K2tog) twice, K14, (K2tog) twice, K1 (20 sts)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (20)

Next row: K2tog across (10)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (10)

Repeat ribbed section:

Work K2, P2 rib for 2”, place sts on holder.

From wrong side of work pick up 10 sts from last garter st row before ribbed section begins and work second ribbed section in K2, P2 rib for 2”.

Re-join ribbed sections as above, by placing 10 sts ea on 2 needles, holding needles together and knitting 1 stitch from front needle together with 1 stitch from back needle across (10)

Increase for second heart as follows:

Next row: Inc in ea st across (20)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (20)

Next row: K1, inc, K16, inc, K1 (22)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (22)

Next row: K1, inc, K18, inc, K1 (24)

Knit 5 rows even (24)

Decrease to end point as follows:

Next row: K1, K2tog, K18, K2tog, K1 (22)

Next row: Knit 1 row even (22)

Next row: K1, K2tog, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1 (20)

Next row: Knit even (20)

Repeat last 2 rows until 4 sts remain.
Next row: (K2tog) twice (2)

Next row: K.

Next row: K2tog. Bind off. 

Finishing: Weave in all ends.

To wear, fold center portion of scarf in half lengthwise, place scarf around neck and insert one heart through ribbed loop section.
