FESTIVE OCCASION HATS (in 4 sizes)

Sizes:  Baby (Child, Teen, Adult)

Materials:  Worsted wt. wool, acrylic, or blends - approx. 25 (50, 50, 50) yds. ea. Color A, 50 (50, 75, 75) yds. Color B, 10 (20, 30, 30) yds. Color C

FOR SOLID COLOR HAT:  85 (120, 150, 150) yds. total

16" size 8 (5 mm) circular needle (or size 8 (5 mm) straight needles if knitting flat)

Set of size 8 (5 mm) dpns - or size needles necessary to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge:  4.5 sts = 1", 6 rows = 1" in stockinette st on size 8 (5 mm) needles

 

Possible color choices:

     Stripe Color A  Stripe Color B      Rib Color C

Valentine's Day:               Pink             White                             Red

Easter:                            Yellow                   Lavender or Pink    Pale Green or Blue

St. Patrick's Day:            White          Kelly Green            Golden Yellow

4th of July:                     White          Navy                     Red

Halloween:                       Black           Orange                  Yellow

Thanksgiving:                            Yellow                   Brown                    Orange

Christmas:                       Red              White                    Green

 

Stitches/Terms:  beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), decrease (dec), increase (inc), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), place marker (pm),  purl (P), repeat (rep), stockinette stitch (st st), stitch (st), yarn over (yo)

 

NOTES:  Carry colors loosely up inside of hat, cutting only when no longer needed.  If knitting circularly, change to dpn when stitches no longer fit comfortably on needle.

 

Hat

Cast on  54 sts ( baby),  64 sts (child),  74 sts (teen), 84 sts (adult), join into ring, being careful not to twist cast-on stitches. Place marker to note beginning of round.

 

With Color C, work 1" in K1, P1 rib (baby/child) or 1-1/2" (teen/adult). 

If turn-up cuff is desired, work 2" in K1, P1 rib(baby/child), or 3" (teen/adult).

 

Change to stockinette st and work 1 rnd/row in Color C.

 

Change to Color A and continue in st st (knit every round if working circularly, or knit 1 row, purl 1 row if knitting flat), following stripe sequence below:

 

10 rnds/rows in Color A.

2 rnds/rows in Color B.

4 rnds/rows in Color A.

6 rnds/rows in Color B.

8 rnds/rows in Color A.

10 rnds/rows in Color B.

 

Work as many color sequence rnds/rows as necessary until hat measures from beginning 3-1/2" (baby), 5" (child), 6-1/2" (teen), 8" (adult), then work top decreases below.  (NOTE: If making fold-up cuff version, measure from halfway point of ribbed section)

 

Decrease rounds/rows:

*K6, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across) - NOTE: Don't worry if you have leftover sts on decrease rnds/rows; they will be gathered at the top of hat.

Knit 1 round plain (if working circularly) - OR - Purl 1 row plain (if knitting flat).

*K5, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across).

Repeat plain round (or row).

*K4, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across).

Repeat plain round (or row).

*K3, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across).

Repeat plain round (or row).

*K2, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across).

Repeat plain round (or row).

*K1, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across).

Repeat plain round (or row). Leaving 12" to 18" tail, cut yarn, thread into yarn needle, draw needle through remaining stitches to gather top, fasten off and weave in ends - OR - if knitting flat, gather sts and sew back seam as invisibly as possible.

If desired, trim hat with pompoms, I-cord strands, bows, braids, tassels or decorative buttons.
