Materials

Soft worsted wt. acrylic (sample shown in Caron “Simply Soft”)

Size 8 circular needle (16” length) and set of 4 (or 5) double-pointed needles (dpn)

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4.5 sts = 1” in stockinette stitch in the round on size 8 circular needle

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), pattern (patt), repeat (rep), round (rnd), stitch (st), together (tog), yarn over (yo)

Cast on 72 sts, join for working circularly, being careful not to twist sts. Place marker to note beg of rnds.

Rnds 1-6: Knit.

Rnd 7 (begin lace patt): *(K2tog) 3 times, (yo, k1) 6 times, (K2tog) 3 times, rep from * around.

Rnd 8-10: Knit.

Rep Rnds 7-10 until hat measures 5” from beg, ending with a plain knit round.

Begin crown decreases (Note: switch to dpn when sts no longer fit comfortably on circular needle)

Rnd 1 (dec): *K7, K2tog, rep from * around (64 sts)

Rnd 2: Knit.

Rnd 3 (dec): *K6, K2tog, rep from * around (56 sts)

Rnd 4: Knit.

Rnd 5 (dec): *K5, K2tog, rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 6: Knit.

Rnd 7 (dec): *K4, K2tog, rep from * around (40 sts)

Rnd 8: Knit.

Rnd 9 (dec): *K5, K2tog, rep from * around (32 sts)

Rnd 10 (dec): *K4, K2tog, rep from * around (24 sts)

Rnd 11 (dec): *K3, K2tog, rep from * around (16 sts)

Rnd 12 (dec): *K2, K2tog, rep from * around (8 sts)

Cut yarn, leaving 10” tail. Gather sts tog to close top of hat. Weave in tails.

Finishing:

Add ribbon or yarn bow or pompom to top of hat if desired.
