Sizes: Small (Medium, Large) 8 high
Note: Beanie will stretch to fit up to 3 larger than unstretched
measurements:
Small: 18 circumference (unstretched)
Medium: 20 circumference (unstretched)
Large: 22 circumference (unstretched)
Little Basket: 5.5 diameter, 3 high
150 yds. worsted weight
Sample shown in Lion Brand Yarns Vannas Choice (100% acrylic, 170
yds/156 m. per 3.5 oz./100 g. ball)
Size 8 (5 mm.) circular needle, 16 length or size needed to
achieve gauge
Set of 4 or 5 size 8 (5 mm.) double-pointed needles
acrylic, wool, or wool-blend yarn
Gauge: 16 sts & 22 rows = 4 in stockinette stitch on size 8 needle
Take time to check gauge.
Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO),
decrease
(dec), knit (K), knit two together (K2tog), purl (P), remaining (rem),
repeat (rep),
stitch (st), stockinette stitch (st st)
Pattern notes: Beanie is worked in the round from lower rib to top
decreases.
With circular needle, loosely CO 72 (80, 88). Join for knitting in
the round, being
careful that stitches are not twisted on needle and placing marker
at joining to
note beginning of rounds.
Rnds 1-7: *K1, P1, rep from * around - 72 (80, 88)
Begin top decreases (Note: change to dpns when sts no longer fit
comfortably
on circular needle):
Rnd 40: *K7 (8, 9), K2tog, rep from * around 64 (72, 80) sts
Rnd 42: *K6 (7, 8), K2tog, rep from * around 56 (64, 72) sts
Rnd 44: *K5 (6, 7), K2tog, rep from * around 48 (56, 64) sts
Rnd 46: *K4 (5, 6), K2tog, rep from * around 40 (48, 56) sts
Rnd 48: *K3 (4, 5), K2tog, rep from * around 32 (40, 48) sts
Rnd 50: *K2 (3, 4), K2tog, rep from * around 24 (32, 40) sts
Rnd 51: *K1 (2, 3), K2tog, rep from * around 16 (24, 32) sts
For Medium & Large sizes only:
Rnd 52: *K2tog, rep from * around - (12, 16) sts
Cut yarn, leaving 8 tail. Thread tail through tapestry needle and
run it through
remaining sts twice to gather and close top. Weave in all ends.
Little Basket option
Following instructions for smallest size beanie, CO 72. Work Rnds
1-17 of
pattern, then skip to Rnd 40. Work Rnds 40-51 and finish off as for
hat.
Turn piece upside down and use as a little basket!
