YEAR-ROUND NECK SCARF

printer-friendly version

(knit or crochet - spring/summer & fall/winter versions)

A very easy scarf with a twist!  Scarf is worked straight then joined in a circle. The twist remains permanently, allowing scarf to drape around the neck without fuss.

Size:  Approx. 4" wide, 33" circumference

Yarns & Gauge: Many soft, fuzzy, sport, DK or worsted-weight novelty yarns, or combinations of soft, smooth yarn held together with novelty ribbon are suitable for this scarf (sample shown in Crystal Palace Merino Frappe held together with Dazzle ribbon)

Gauge not critical - approx. 4 sts = 1" on size 11 (8 mm) needles

Materials: Approx. 75-100 yds. soft, textured novelty yarn, or 75-100 yds. each of two yarns held together as one

Spring/summer version: use textured cotton-blend novelties

Fall/winter version: use soft, fuzzy yarn together with soft novelty ribbon

Size 11 (8 mm) needles for knit version

Size J/10 (6 mm) hook for crochet version

Tapestry needle

Stitches/Terms: beginning (beg), bind off (BO), cast on (CO), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), repeat (rep), single crochet (sc), stitch (st)

NOTE: Consult a knitting technique book for provisional or crochet cast-on instructions, and for three-needle bind off.

Knit Version: Using provisional or crochet cast-on (so stitches on first row can be released later and bound-off together with final row), cast on 15 sts.  Work in garter stitch (knit every row) until scarf measures approx. 33".  Leave last row of stitches on needle.  Place beginning row of stitches on second needle by removing provisional or crochet cast-on.  Before seaming, give one end of scarf a half-twist, then join cast-on row to final row by using the 3-needle bindoff method.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

Crochet Version:

Chain 15, sc in 2nd ch and ea ch across (14 sc). Ch 3, turn.

Row 1:  Dc in ea sc across (14 dc). Ch 1, turn.

Row 2:  Sc in ea dc across (14 sc). Ch 3, turn.

Rep last 2 rows until scarf measures approx. 33".  Before seaming, give one end of scarf a half-twist, then hold beginning chain together with last row worked, slip st across through both thicknesses to form scarf into a circle. Fasten off and weave in ends.
