Skill level: Easy to Intermediate

Size: Stretches to fit Teen/Adult - approx. 21" circumference x 7" high unstretched

Materials:

150 yds. worsted wt. wool, wool-blend or acrylic yarn (sample shown in Lion Brand "Wool-Ease")

Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Size 10 (6 mm) circular knitting needle (16" length)

Tapestry needle

Gauge: First 3 rnds of crocheted crown = 3.5" with worsted wt. on size H hook

Pattern notes: Top of hat is a crocheted octagon that transforms into a square shape. Stitches are picked up all around edge of square for circular knitting of the ribbed sides. Stitches are bound off with crochet hook and the cap is finished with rounds of single and reverse single crochet.

Special stitches:

Shell: Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) all in same st

V-stitch (V-st): Work (dc, ch 1, dc) all in same st

Hat

Rnd 1: With crochet hook, ch 6, join with sl st to make beg ring.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, work 15 dc in ring, join with sl st, do not turn (16 dc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, *ch 3, sk next dc, sc in next dc, rep from * around, ending with ch 3, join with sl st in first sc, do not turn (8 ch-3 lps)

Rnd 4: Sl st into first sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 2, work 2 dc in same sp, *in next sp work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc)(shell completed), rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (8 shells)

Rnd 5: Sl st to first sp, ch 3, in same sp work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc), ch 1, *shell in next shell, ch 1, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (8 shells, 8 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 6: Sl st to first sp, ch 3, in same sp work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc), ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, *shell in next shell, in next ch-1 sp work (ch 1, dc, ch 1), rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (8 shells, 8 ch1-dc-ch1 groups)

Rnd 7: Sl st to first sp, ch 3, in same sp work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc), in next ch-1 sp work (dc, ch 1, dc)(V-st completed), skip next dc, V-st in next ch-1 sp, *shell in next shell, V-st in next 2 ch-1 sps (skipping dc between ch-1 sps), rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (8 shells, 16 V-sts)

Rnd 8: Sl st to first sp, ch 3, in same sp work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc), ch 1, V-st in next 2 V-sts, ch 1, sc in center of next shell, ch 1, V-st in next 2 V-sts, ch 1, shell in next shell, *V-st in next 2 V-sts, ch 1, sc in center of next shell, ch 1, V-st in next 2 V-sts, shell in next shell, rep from * around, ending with V-st, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3, do not turn (4 shells, 16 V-sts)

Transfer stitches to knitting needle as follows:

Place loop from hook onto point of circular knitting need. Pick up one st in ea st and sp around for a total of 82 sts. Join for circular knitting and place marker to note beg of rnds.

Begin rib rnds:

Rnds 1-15: *K1, P1, rep from * around.

Bind off ribbed section by using crochet hook as follows:

Insert hook through front of first 2 knit sts on left point of needle, slip sts to crochet hook, yo, pull lp through the 2 knit sts, yo, pull lp through both lps on hk (sc completed), ch 3.

*Transfer next 2 knit sts to crochet hook in same manner, yo, pull lp through 2 knit sts, yo, pull lp through both lps on hk, ch 3. Rep from * around until all sts have been bound off and one lp remains on hk. Join with sl st to beg sc.

Crochet edging:

Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in ea sc and ch-3 lp around, join with sl st, do not turn (82 sc)

Rnd 2 (dec rnd): Ch 1, sc in same sc, sc next 2 sc tog, *sc in next sc, sc2tog, rep from * around, join with sl st (56 sc)

Last rnd: Ch 1, work reverse sc in ea sc around, join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in tails.
