Shell Stitch Baby Bonnet

This can be made to fit from Preemie to newborn by using different size hooks and by omitting or adding row 6.

Hooks and bonnet sizes:

G hook makes 12 in. bonnet
I makes 13 in. bonnet
J makes 16 in. bonnet.

Use Worsted Weight yarn of your choice.

Special Stitch:
Shell stitch is 5 dc in same stitch
beginning shell stitch is ch 3 4 dc in same st.

Instructions:
1) Ch 6, join to form circle. ch 3, 11 dc on circle. sl st in top of ch 3 to join.( 12 dc)
2) Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around sl st in top of Ch 3. ( 24 dc)
3) Ch 3, 4 dc in same st. ( beginning shell st made)* sk 1 st, sc in next st, sk 1 st, Shell in next st.* repeat between * * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3. ( 6 shell st)
4) Sl st to middle of shell, ch 1, sc in same st. * 5 dc shell in next sc, sc in middle of next shell* Repeat * to * around (6 shells)
5-6) Repeat round 4
7) ch 3, 4 dc in same st, *ch 1, sc in the 2 nd dc of next shell, ch 1 sc in 4 th dc of same shell, shell in sc* repeat * to * around.
8) Sl st to middle of shell, ch 1 sc in same st, *shell in next ch 1 sp, sc in sc, shell in next ch 1 space, sc in middle dc of next shell.* repeat from * to * until you have 8 shells completed sc in next ch 1 space.

For Bonnet Tie:  Ch 41. Tie knot in end of chain. Cut off excess yarn at end. Sl st in first sc of row 8.   Weave in all ends. 

POMPOM:

Wrap yarn around your index finger and Middle finger 30 times. tie a piece of yarn around middle. Cut the loops in the middle and trim down to make pom pom.
Tie in the middle of the bonnet crown.
