Instructions:
Row 1: With I hook and white, ch 86. Sc
in 2nd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, (dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc) in next ch, skip 2 ch, sc in next
ch, rep from * across (14 shells).
Row 2: Turn. Ch 4 (counts as first dc
& ch), dc in 1st sc, *sc in middle dc of next group, (dc, ch1, dc, ch1, dc) in next
sc, rep from * across, ending (dc, ch1, dc) in last sc.
Row 3: Turn. Ch 1, sc in first dc, *(dc,
ch1, dc, ch1, dc) in next sc, sc in middle dc of next group, rep from * across, ending sc
in 3rd ch of beg ch-4. Repeat Rows 2 & 3 until pad measures
approx. 13" from beginning. Fasten off white. Turn pad upside down and work on
opposite side of starting chain.
Edging:
Rnd 1: Join white in approximate center
stitch of beginning chain, ch 1, sc in same st, sc evenly around entire pad with 3 sc in
each corner. Join with sl st to beg sc, fasten off.
Rnd 2: Join first contrast color (CC)
(yellow), DO NOT TURN, ch 1, sc around with 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st to beg
sc, fasten off. Rnd 3: Join second CC (orange), TURN, ch
1, sc around with 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st, fasten off.
Rnd 4 (buttonhole round): Join third CC
(red), TURN. On this round you make small buttonholes evenly around the entire edging,
every 6 to 8 sts, being sure to place a buttonhole at each corner. For buttonhole: ch2, skip 2 sc, *sc in next 6 or 8 sc, ch 2, skip 2 sc, rep from * around. (Buttonholes
are used later depending on how you decide to fasten the bunting, but are small enough not
to show if left unused). Join with sl st to first sc, fasten off.
Rnd 5: Join fourth CC (blue), TURN, ch 1,
sc in ea sc around, placing 2 sc in each buttonhole and 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl
st, fasten off. Rnd 6: Join fifth CC (purple), TURN, ch
1, sc in ea sc around with 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st, fasten off. Weave in all
ends. Finishing: Place pad on table with shorter lengths at sides. Fold each side to the middle to form
bunting. Decide how you want to close the front.
NOTE: MAKE
SURE ALL RIBBONS, TIES OR BUTTONS ARE FASTENED SECURELY. Lengths of ribbon
or crocheted ties can be attached to buttonholes on both sides of front opening. A longer
length of ribbon or crocheted chain threaded through buttonholes at the lower edge form a
drawstring to close it. Or sew on flat buttons to one side of front and lower openings.
Ribbon could be threaded around the upper portion to form a hood, or the top can be left
open to form a collar and padding for baby's head. If you want to use it as a blanket,
untie or unbutton all fastenings and lay it flat. If you want to use it only as a bunting,
slip stitch crochet fronts and back together across the bottom so it remains closed.
That's why it's named the Changeable RAINBOW Baby
Bunting!
