Use
dark colors: gray, tan, brown, navy, dark green, black, camouflage Materials: 1 ball worsted weight wool or acrylic 16-inch size 8 circular and size 8
double-point needles (for circular knitting) - OR - Size 8 straight needles
(for flat knitting back and forth) Gauge: 9 sts = 2" in stockinette stitch
NOTE: Hat sizes may vary depending on yarn thickness. As you knit, try hat
on your own head to determine snug fit and suitable length to cover the ears.
Change to dpn when stitches no longer fit comfortably on circular needle.
Cast on 72 sts (for small), 76 sts (for medium) or 80 sts (for large). Knit 1" to 1-1/2" of K1 P1 rib. Continue knitting around (if working circularly), or knit 1 row, purl 1 row for
stockinette stitch (if knitting flat). When hat measures approx.
7" from beginning, begin top decreases. *K6, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across) - (Don't worry if you have leftover
sts) Knit 1 round plain (if working circular) - OR - Purl 1 row plain (if flat
knitting). *K5, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across). Repeat plain round (or row). *K4, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across). Repeat plain round (or row). *K3, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across). Repeat plain round (or row). *K2, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across). Repeat plain round (or row). *K1, K2 tog, rep from * around (or across). Repeat plain round (or row). *K2 tog around (or across). Leaving 12" to 18" tail, cut yarn, thread
into yarn needle, draw needle through remaining stitches to gather them, fasten
off and weave in ends - OR - if knitting flat, sew back seam as
invisibly as possible.
