Thick & Quick Crochet & Knit Handbag

Designed by Sherrie E.;  ©2008 piece-by-piece

Finished Dimensions (not including handle): 8" wide x 10" long

Supplies:

1 skein of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn

1 piece of 5/8" wide ribbon about 24" long

1 10" x 12" piece of fabric for lining, if desired

1 large snap closure, if desired

Size 13 circulars 24"

Crochet hook size L (K hook would work, too, if you don't have an L hook)

Special Stitches:

BLO:  Back loop only.  Instead of crocheting in the entire stitch which is both loops, crochet through the back loop of the top part of the stitch.  The back loop (bl) is the loop farthest from you.

HDC2tog:  Half-double crochet two together.  Work a hdc in the next stitch without completing the very last step (keep all three loops on hook) , then hdc in the next stitch without completing the last step. You should have 5 loops on the hook then yarn over and draw through all the loops. Decrease made.

For the handle of the Handbag>

Crochet 62 chain stitches.  HDC in 2nd stitch from hook.  HDC in each chain stitch.  Finish off.

Assembling the Handbag>

Turn handbag inside out.  At the bottom opening of the handbag, whip stitch the two sides together.

Measure the handbag to make the lining.  You'll want to use a piece of fabric that is 1" larger than the handbag's measurements on the top and sides.  So, if your handbag measures 8" long and 10" wide, your piece of fabric should measure 9" long and 11" wide.  Sew a 1/2" seam allowance on the top and sides of the fabric.  Hand sew the lining into the wrong side of the handbag.

Using a scrap of yarn, stitch the wrong side of the handbag handle onto each end of the handbag.

Hand sew a large snap in the center of each side of the handbag.

Turn handbag back to the right side.

Weave ribbon through two of the half-double crochets in the center front of the handbag. (Or, just past the center front, if you've sewn a snap closure in the center.)  Tie the ribbon into a bow.  Enjoy all the compliments you'll receive wearing your new Thick & Quick Crochet & Knit  Handbag!
